Kitchen Table Philanthropy

Sometimes, the simplest memories from your childhood can have a tremendous impact on your life. We all remember our Mom and Dad, Lili and Bill Goldberg, sitting at the kitchen table in our home. But it wasn’t mealtime. It was a time of giving. You see, they would routinely sit down and write checks to a number of charities. And as they wrote, they would explain to us (and later to their grandchildren) what organizations they were helping, and why. This simple act of kindness, performed in the privacy of our kitchen, taught us the value of giving back. It’s a lesson we hold dear.

Philanthropy is part of the fabric of the William Goldberg family. It began with our parents, but it continues through the generations. They instilled in their children and grandchildren the desire to stand for something worthwhile, to share our good fortune with others, to have a greater purpose.

Today, we provide ongoing support to many charities, with a wide range of interests and needs. Here are three that are especially close to our hearts:

BIGVISION is a remarkable organization founded by Eve Goldberg to honor her son Isaac. Lili and Bill’s beloved grandson lost his battle with addiction in 2013, at the young age of 23. As Isaac struggled to stay sober after rehab, Eve recognized there was a void in the recovery process – the need for a safe, sober environment where young adults could learn to enjoy life and find meaning and purpose. BIGVISION helps young adults in recovery connect with each other and build self-esteem. They enjoy fun activities and develop life skills in an accepting community of their peers who are also striving to live substance-free lives. What began as a mother’s desire to do something positive in memory of her child has blossomed into an organization of support, encouragement and comfort for those in need. The next big step is to build BIGVISION Community Centers nationwide, to help even more deserving young people discover passion and enjoyment in a sober life. It is truly a BIGVISION. bigvision.nyc

It’s been said, “Charity should begin at home, but should not stay there.”  What began around the Goldberg kitchen table has found its way into our hearts – and into the world we all share.
