We’ll Always Have Paris: A Surprise Proposal in the City of Love

Paris, France — the City of Love and possibly one of the most romantic places in the world to propose. Max Guliani and his love, Suzanne Dirks arrived in Paris for a much-deserved vacation after a busy season of working and attending grad school in New York.

Here’s a little backstory on the happy couple: Max and Suzanne grew up on the same street in the West Village, New York City, had mutual friends their entire lives, but they never met until 2013. The two reconnected in 2017 and have dated ever since! They even still live on the same street they grew up on.

A week before the two left for Paris, Suzanne accidentally stumbled upon a William Goldberg bag in the back of a dresser drawer while putting away Max’s socks. She saw a small box inside the bag but resisted the urge to open it. Like any curious girlfriend, she checked the drawer right before they left for their trip to see if the bag was there (she had to know!).

To her dismay, the bag was still in the drawer, so she “knew” a proposal wasn’t happening on this trip. But Max was sneaky and brought the little box along, even after Suzanne checked the dresser.

Now, back to Paris, Max and Suzanne stayed in an adorable Airbnb with a direct view of the twinkling Eiffel Tower. On their first morning exploring the city, the couple decided to walk closer to the landmark, crossing a bridge when Max suggested, “Oh, let’s go down here. I think it’s a cool spot.”

Suzanne set up a self-timer to snap a few photos of her and Max posing in front of the Eiffel Tower. She told Max to take off his backpack for photos, and when she turned around, he was down on one knee! He said, “I want to spend the rest of my life with you. Will you marry me?” Suzanne was in complete shock, “Are you serious?” she said. And then, of course, followed it with, “Yes!”

The newly engaged couple cherished their time away together, grateful to soak in their new engagement without immediately rushing back to their busy lives.

Let’s talk about Suzanne’s gorgeous ring! Before grad school, when Suzanne worked with Eve Goldberg at BIGVISION, the foundation she started eight years ago, they discussed that when the time was right, Eve would help Suzanne find the perfect ring. Fast forward a few years, at the William Goldberg atelier, Max was treated like family and chose a stunning oval cut diamond set on an 18 karat yellow gold band, a timeless ring that Suzanne will love forever!
