Mexican screen siren María Félix—known as much for her exuberant personality as her eccentric and extensive jewelry collection—had a favorite diamond: an extraordinary 41.37-carat D-flawless diamond ring. Its unusual, elongated cushion cut and faceted corners made it sparkle as if it possessed the light of a thousand stars. This was the Ashoka.
The Ashoka moniker—which honors the third-century B.C. pacifist Buddhist Emperor Ashoka—means “to remove sorrow” in Sanskrit. And surely it did just that for Ms. Félix, who was often photographed in her prized diamond ring. Decades after the diamond first appeared on Félix’s hand, and likely a century or more after its initial discovery in the mines of Golconda, the Goldberg family brought the power of the Ashoka to the world. A diamond for the ages.
